(MENAFN) Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac) reported 18.9 percent increase in passenger traffic through Abu Dhabi International Airport in 2012, official news agency WAM reported.
Adac said that the airport handled more than 14.7 million passengers last year compared to 2011.
Adac also reported 17.9 percent increase in cargo volume last year to 567,965 tonnes compared to the previous year.
This was driven by more airlines coming to Abu Dhabi and existing airlines expanding their services to the Gulf emirate.
Last year, new international airlines commenced new routes from Abu Dhabi, including Air Berlin and Air Seychelles, Alitalia, Garuda and Hainan Airlines.
Local airlines such as RAK Airways and Rotana Jet also started new routes through Abu Dhabi in 2012.
The top five routes from Abu Dhabi International Airport during 2012 were Bangkok, London Heathrow, Doha, Manila and Sydney.
These destinations collectively generated 20 percent of the airport’s total passenger traffic, according to Adac.
