(MENAFN) Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker said the airline entered in the Oneworld alliance rather than Star alliance as it encountered “hostility” from Lufthansa towards the growth of Gulf carriers in Europe, Bloomberg reported.
He said that Qatar Airways first signed a codeshare agreement in Europe with Lufthansa, but unfortunately their strategy is to “kill competition”.
Qatar Airways is the first Gulf recruit to a global alliance and is due to become a full Oneworld member within 18 months.
In May, Al Baker rejected a suggestion by Lufthansa chairman Christoph Franz that European airlines were restrained by government policies in a way Gulf carriers were not.
Qatar Airways’ fleet of 111 planes will be increased by a further 250 it has on order worth USD50 billion at list prices.
