(MENAFN) Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport said that the emirate’s Executive Council approved the funding of Abu Dhabi metro and light-rail transit system, reported Gulf News.
The department added that the council has also approved the funding of the new Abu Dhabi-Dubai road and the Mafraq-Ghuwaifat road to the Saudi border.
It also said that the metro, which would link the proposed Central Business District with Sowwah Island, Reem Island, Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi International Airport and Masdar, the Capital City District, Emerald Gateway, Zayed Sports City and Adnwould, would be operational by 2016-2017.
It is worth noting that the 131km Abu Dhabi Metro would be connected to the Dubai Metro and other cities in the UAE and to other GCC countries.
