Abu Dhabi, Dubai to establish $11b railway

29 Sep 2010

(MENAFN) Richard Bowker, Chief Executive Officer, of Abu Dhabi-based Union Railway said that the UAE is planning to increase the country’s logistics industry by launching a 1,500 kilometer railway worth $11 billion that links Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Khaleej Time reported.

The first phase of the project will be a 270-kilometre cargo rail line connecting Abu Dhabi?s Shah sour gas field to Ruwais on the Gulf coast, to transport granulated sulfur for export.

This week the railway is going to open pre-qualification documents for the major engineering, procurement and construction contract covering that route, and the project is working on pre-qualification of bidders for the Shah-Habshan line construction project.

According to the CEO, this connection is vital for the nation’s logistics as a whole.
