(MENAFN) The General Manager of Algeria’s state grains agency (OAIC) said that Algeria expects to garner a good grains harvest this season and is likely to match the record crop of the previous period, Reuters reported.
Of the 3,317,186 hectares sowed this season, 1,956,531 hectares are for wheat including 1,342,507 hectares durum wheat and 614,024 hectares soft wheat, the official said.
Algeria is usually one of the world’s largest grain importers but it announced last month it was planning to export barley for the first time in 40 years thanks to a strong harvest. The country’s cereal harvest was a record of 6.12 million tons in 2009.
