(MENAFN) Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMS) said that wheat output in the Arab world edged up by 26.5 percent in 2009 compared to the previous year, Reuters reported.
It added that the Arab world’s cereals production hit 54.98 million tons last year against 46.68 million tons in the previous year with an increase amounting to 17.8 percent, while it hit 25.89 million tons of wheat against 20.47 million tons with a hike by 26.5 percent.
As for Egypt’s output of cereals, it hit 22.66 million tons in 2009 against 23.63 million tons compared to the previous year with a dip by 4.1 percent in what includes 8.52 million tons of wheat against 7.98 million tons the year before with an increase by 6.8 percent as well as 5.52 million tons of rice against 7.25 million tons with a decrease by 23.9 percent, it said.
It added that the Arab world’s output of vegetables saw a slight rise with total output of 53.15 million tons in 2009 compared to 51.67 million tons in the previous year with an increase by 2.9 percent, while the fruits output notched 31.34 million tons against 29.87 million tons with an increase by 4.9 percent.
