(MENAFN) Dubai Municipality said it will launch a campaign to make all expatriates pay housing fees by the end of June 2012, Arabian Business reported.
Plans are underway to issue non-paying residents with reminders to fill in online forms to ensure they are correctly billed.
Around 60 percent of residents in Dubai currently pay the monthly fee, but those who haven’t been billed will not have their payments backdated, the municipality said.
The “expat tax” was introduced in 2005, and has attracted criticism from some expatriates, who complain they have been unfairly targeted, as the UAE Nationals do not pay housing fees.
Housing fees are calculated at five percent of the tenant’s annual rent. Freehold property owners pay five percent of the annual rental value, as calculated by the RERA index.
