(MENAFN) The Director of the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (Wipo), Francis Gurry, said that international patent filings by Gulf countries under Wipo’s Patent Cooperation Treaty experienced a 14.56 percent increase in 2010, reported Gulf News.
Gurry said that despite the difficult economic conditions, the international patent filings by Gulf countries rose to 118 in 2010 from 103 in 2009.
According to official data, Saudi Arabia accounted for 78 of the patent filings, followed by the UAE with 29, Qatar with 7, Oman with 4 while Kuwait and Bahrain had no patent filings in 2010.
Gurry mentioned that global Patent Cooperation Treaty [PCT] filings rebounded a little after the economic crisis in 2009, almost reaching the same level of 2008.
