(MENAFN) Lufthansa, the German airline, announced it is planning to drop its once-daily flight between Frankfurt and Abu Dhabi starting from summer 2015, mainly due to competition from Etihad, Arab News reported.
The carrier said that despite being a substantial demand on services between Germany and the UAE in recent years, the Gulf carriers, particularly Etihad has been able to control the market due to its increased presence, as well as Etihad Airways’ deal of code-sharing flights with Air Berlin.
This deal led Etihad to have a huge over-capacity in compared with Lufthansa, which resulted in making the service between Frankfurt and Abu Dhabi becoming increasingly uneconomical for the German carrier which led to the decision of dropping the service.
