Indian workforce in UAE down in 2010

22 Nov 2011

(MENAFN) The Indian Consulate in the UAE said that since salaries in India rose, during 2010, the number of visas issued to Indians to come to the UAE fell notably, as citizens preferred to stay at their home country, reported Arabian Business.

The consulate added that India introduced a National Rural Employment Guarantee Act which offered 100 days of work a year to rural households, which increased the opportunity for workers in villages to find jobs in the country instead of traveling abroad.

It also said that the number of Indian workers in the UAE would be expected to witness a further drop, since their country offered better job opportunities to its citizens.

It is worth noting that the UAE is home to around 1.75 million Indian expatriates, representing the largest group of foreign workers in the country.
