(MENAFN) Jordan and France signed seven agreements to boost bilateral cooperation in the fields of nuclear energy, finance, agriculture and the movie industry, The Jordan Times reported.
Under one of the agreements, the two countries will be involved in a joint venture for the exploration and production of uranium in Jordan.
The Jordan French Uranium Mining Company (JFUMC) has been set up as a joint venture between the French mining giant, AREVA, and the Jordan Energy Resources Inc.
According to the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC), Jordan is home to some 130,000 tons of uranium, most of which is found within 1.5 meters of the surface and suitable for extraction.
A second agreement signed between the two countries commits France to help Jordan advance its nuclear program for peaceful uses, including the training of the necessary manpower.
Jordan’s first nuclear power plant, a 1,000-megawattt Generation III reactor, is slated to be built some 25 kilometers south of the Red Sea port of Aqaba within the next decade, officials said.
