(MENAFN) Work is progressing to exempt imported wood from customs duties in an offer to reduce deforestation, while stakeholders will be able to import wood, timber and coal at cost price, which should prevent illegal logging.
Meanwhile, forests in the kingdom make up less than 1 percent of the nation”s total area, placing the kingdom amid the poorest nations in the world in terms of forest cover.
In addition, forestland reached 1.5mn dunums, of which 250.000 dunums are bare, 400.000 dunums are natural forests, 500.000 dunums are planted forests.
However, nobody has applied for a license to import wood for heating purposes so far, while there are plans to establish co-op societies that would support import.
