Jordan to spend $575m on water projects this year

(MENAFN) Jordanian Minister of Water and Irrigation said that the government has allocated nearly $575 million this year for water projects designed to balance supply and demand, Petra news agency reported.
He made the remarks during a ceremony marking World Water Day, which is celebrated annually on March 22 with the aim of drawing attention to water shortages and the lack of access to clean water around the world.
The projects are part of the ministry’s executive program, which seeks to explore new water resources in a country the World Bank has called the fourth most water-deprived nation in the world, with an annual water deficit of 500 million cubic meters.
The minister said the Arab region represents over 15 percent of the world’s land mass and houses 5.4 percent of the world’s population, yet is home to only 0.006 percent of global renewable water resources.
