(MENAFN) Kenyan Security Minister, George Saitoti, said that the country is investigating people in the UAE and South Africa regarding a network smuggling tons of gold from eastern Congo, reported Arabian Business.
The minister said that the country is collaborating with Congo against the smuggling as large amounts of gold from eastern Congo had been recovered in Nairobi and Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam.
Investigations were accelerated in response to the killing of a Kenyan tax official during the investigations.
It is worth noting that the President of Congo, Joseph Kabila, banned mining for gold in several areas under conflicts in Congo, in an attempt to stop what he calls the mafia groups that dominate gold smuggling.
