(MENAFN) The Sultanate of Oman began working on turning Sultan Qaboos Port into a tourist hub by transferring most commercial cargo activities from the Muscat-based port to Sohar, Times of Oman reported.
The government has set August 31as deadline for receiving container, cargo, vehicle carriers and project materials vessels at Sultan Qaboos Port (SQP) in Muscat, after which they will be transferred to Sohar Industrial Port.
The last four months of the year will be used for clearing goods at the Muscat port warehouses and yards before its conversion into a tourist hub.
By implementing this movie, the government expects that tourist arrivals will increase by 24 per cent by 2018, to 1.35 million visitors annually.
The tourism sector has previously contributed to USD2.54 billion to Oman’s GDP in 2013 and, this contribution is expected to rise by 10.2 per cent to USD2.79 billion in 2014.
