(MENAFN) Oman Railways announced that the first phase of the diesel operated-Oman railway from Sohar to Buraimi will be completed by 2018, as the Sultanate peruses its commitment to integrate its railway with the planned GCC railway network, Oman Observer reported.
Meanwhile, the second part of the Oman Railway project, which will be connecting the major port cities of Duqm, Salalah and Sohar, is still under construction with the two track network expected to service both passenger and freight movement, with the special focus on the container traffic.
Oman Railways said that countries around the world, including the GCC, are investing more in their railways due to its being nine time more safer than roads with the ability to handle more capacity, as well as it contributing much less to air and noise pollution.
The company also said that current priority of the project will be to connect the commercial port cities of Oman with the GCC railway, which is expected to be 2.177km-long, and will link all six states by rail for the first time by running down the Gulf coast from Kuwait, through Saudi Arabia, to the UAE and Oman, with branches linking Bahrain and Qatar.
