(MENAFN) Qatar said it will award a second contract worth USD1.2 billion to start dredging works on the new port in Doha, state news agency QNA reported.
The Steering Committee of the New Doha Port Project is set to sign the contract for dredging the main channel, after it had awarded its bid to Middle East Dredging Company.
The contract includes dredging and construction of the 15-metre deep approach channel, which will be the deepest in the world when completed in 2016.
The new port will span a 26, 5 sqm area, have an annual total cargo handling capacity of 6 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
The Steering Committee in January 2011 awarded a contract to China Harbour Engineering Company to start construct on the port basin and inner breakwaters.
