(MENAFN) Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani has formally inaugurated $5.8 billion project (Qatalum), a world-scale aluminum plant, QNA reported
Qatalum, a Qatar Petroleum-Norsk Hydro joint venture, will have a first phase capacity of 585,000 tons of primary aluminum, which is to be achieved through a production ramp-up this year.
The project occupies an area of approximately 2.7 square kilometers and includes the two potroom buildings, where the electrolysis process takes place producing primary aluminum.
Qatalum is the largest primary aluminum plant ever built in one phase. The state-of-the-art facility at Mesaieed houses the world’s largest casthouse, a smelter, carbon plant and a dedicated gas-fired power plant with a capacity of approximately 1,350MW.
The project is based on Norwegian company Hydro’s proprietary electrolytic reduction cell technology whose advantages are low investment costs, high productivity, low energy consumption and reduced emissions.
