(MENAFN) Saudi EXPEC Advanced Research Center’s Drilling Technology Team’s (DTT) chief technologist, Nasser Al-Khanferi, said that the team managed to develop the first down-hole drilling microchip and test it in an Aramco well, reported Arab News.
Al-Khanferi added that the development indicated that the project was on the right path to deploy the microchip for practical and useful applications in the near term.
He also said that the microchip would be dropped into the drill string, where it would be capable of recording in-situ data and store it on board the chip while traveling down-hole; finally, it would come back to surface with the circulating drilling fluid, and the recorded data would be downloaded wirelessly for immediate use at the rig site or transmitted back to an operation center.
It is worth noting that the industry’s first field test of a drilling microchip was successfully carried out in an Aramco well after more than 3 years of challenging work in overcoming several technical, design, manufacturing and lab testing challenges.
