(MENAFN) The Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) said that the emirate has reported 70 percent hotel occupancy in the first quarter of this year, a slight increase over last year’s figures, Gulf News reported.
The SCTDA issued a report that showed a slight increase in hotel occupancy rates, with the number of guests staying in the emirate’s hotels increasing from 368,309 in 2009 to 401,647 this year, proving the resilience of the emirate’s tourism sector despite the impacts of the global financial downturn.
The statistics also revealed a slight growth in the tourism sector, with an overall occupancy rate of 70 percent in the first quarter of this year, compared to 69 percent in the corresponding period in 2009.
Figures also show that the total number of hotels and hotel apartments in Sharjah rose to 109 (41 hotels and 68 hotel apartments), compared to 103 (37 hotels and 66 hotel apartments) in the corresponding period in 2009.
