(MENAFN) Sky News Arabia, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi Media Investment Corporation (Admic) and BSkyB, which is 39 percent owned by News Corp, still plans to launch an 24-hour, Arabic language news station despite the UK phone hacking controversy, reported The National.
Sky News Arabia said in a statement that the controversy linked to News of The World would not affect all of News Corp, and the channel would still be launched next spring to more than 50 million households from Abu Dhabi’s twofour54 media zone.
Last week, however, News Corp canceled a controversial USD12.6 billion plan to buy full control of BSkyB. The plan, which some said would have given Rupert Murdoch too much power over the UK’s media industry, was canceled when Murdoch lost political sway during the controversy.
News Corp has been struggling since allegations surfaced that reporters at News Corp’s News of the World newspaper intercepted and tampered with the voicemails of missing children, victims of terrorist attacks, celebrities, politicians and military personal.
