Skype plans partnerships in MidEast

(MENAFN) Internet telephony firm Skype said that it is getting close to signing partnership pacts with Middle East telecom operators, in a move to tap the young population market in the region, Reuters reported.
Skype’s head of Middle East and Africa, Rouzbeh Pasha, said that the presence of a large number of expatriates also made the Middle East an attractive market. Skype is currently in discussions with several potential partners in the Middle East, he said, and the firm is planning to open an office in the region but did not specify a location.
The Luxembourg-based firm, which routes calls over the Internet to reduce fees to consumers, is considered as a threat to telecom operators and their core telephone call business. But Pasha said that joining hands with Skype would give traditional telecom players access to Skype’s users.
It is worth noting that Skype has more than 500 million users worldwide.
