(MENAFN) The UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said that in the January-November period of 2011, service providers added around 614,000 new mobile phone users, bringing the total number of subscribers to 11.54 million, reported Emirates 24/7.
The authority added that the country had a GSM penetration rate of around 144 percent or around 1.5 mobile phones for every person, recording one of the highest ratios in the world.
However, the level at the end of November was under the 200-percent ratio recorded 3 years ago before the UAE massively revised up its population from just over 5 million to almost 8 million in 2011.
It is worth noting that UAE’s two mobile phone operators, Etisalat and Du, increased their subscriber base last year, as they went on with expansion plans in mobile phones and other telecommunications services.
