(MENAFN) Tonga’s Minister of lands, survey, natural resources, energy, environment and climate change, Lord Ma’afu, said that Tonga’s Energy Road Map Implementation Unit (TERM IU) inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UAE’s Masdar to build a 500kW solar photovoltaic power plant, reported Gulf News.
The minister added that the UAE firm would be responsible of the execution and construction of the plant, which would be installed in Vava’u Island.
He also said that the power plant would be part of the Tonga Energy Road Map, which is a 10-year plan to boost the quality of access to modern energy services through an environmentally sustainable method.
It is worth noting that the solar plant, which would produce nearly 13 percent of Tonga’s yearly electricity demand, would be funded by a grant provided by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).
