Qatar Airways, Brazil’s GOL sign code-share deal

16 Jan 2011

(MENAFN) Akbar Al Baker, Chief Executive Officer at Qatar Airways, announced that it has signed a code share agreement with Brazil’s GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes, in order to link 47 Brazilian routes for the state backed carrier, Bloomberg reported.

According to Al Baker, the code share will allow Qatar Airways access to some of Brazil’s most important business cities such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, while business class passengers will be able to use the code share agreement to travel to the 47 cities linked, while premium passengers will also be able to travel to and from a number of business hubs, such as Delhi, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

The mentioned agreement comes in line with Qatar Airways’ expansion plans in a bid to compete with dominant Gulf carriers such as Etihad and Emirates, whereas this year is scheduled to see the airline launch five new routes across the globe, including ones to Budapest, Brussels and Stuttgart, revealed Al Baker.

GOL, the Brazilian low cost airline, is considered one of the biggest airlines operating in the South American country with a fleet of 108 aircraft. It operates some 860 flights daily to 61 destinations in 10 countries.
