(MENAFN) Sudan’s Industry Minister, Abdul-Wahab Osman, said that the country would launch a USD1 billion new sugar plant in April to raise annual sugar output by 450,000 tons, reported The Peninsula.
Osman added that the White Nile Sugar Co would have an initial annual white sugar output of 150,000 tons, which would cut Sudan’s reliance on imports.
He also said that the project, which would have 250,000 tons capacity in 2013, would also produce power, animal feed and ethanol.
It is worth noting that Sudan’s Kenana Sugar Co, owned by Saudi, Kuwait and Sudan, is the biggest shareholder in the new plant, and other shareholders include Sudanese companies and 2 Egyptian investors.
