(MENAFN) Research in Motion’s (RIM) co-chief executive, Jim Balsillie, said that in 2011’s first eight months, BlackBerry subscribers in the Middle East grew 140 percent, reported The National.
Balsillie added that although in 2011’s second quarter BlackBerry’s share of the global smartphone market fell to 12 percent from 19 percent in 2010, nevertheless, the company would forecast to expand its business in the Middle East.
He also said that the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service was growing very fast in the region, where 99 percent of BlackBerry users in Saudi used the service, whereas the number in the UAE was at 97 percent.
It is worth noting that RIM is in negotiations with Etisalat and MasterCard in the UAE over near-field communications technology that can be used to offer secure mobile payments.
