(MENAFN) The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Al Hammadi said that Enec submitted an application for constructing nuclear power plants, Braka Units 1 and 2, to the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), reported Gulf News.
Enec said that the submittal comes after Enec and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco), the prime contractor for Enec’s programme, provided documentation on safety measures and standards for the first nuclear power plants in UAE. The documentation took one year to be completed. Enec and Kepco also suggested Braka, towards the west of Abu Dhabi, to be the location for the power plant.
Enec stated that it is currently waiting for the results of a review conducted by FANR. FANR may request more information and meetings before giving approval.
The fundamental issue in accepting the construction license application is the safety analysis as well licenses acquired from the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (Kins) to Kepco. Enec is using Shin Kori 3 and 4 units which were completed previously by Kepco as reference plants the Emeriti program.
