(MENAFN) Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity said in a statement that the power-starved country has invited foreign firms to build three power plants in an effort to boost the national grid by 1,250 megawatts, Reuters reported.
According to the ministry, a 500 MW plant would be built in each of the southern provinces of Basra and Najaf, and a 250 MW plant in the western province of Anbar. The foreign firms are scheduled to present their offers within the coming few weeks to supply, design and implement these plants.
Iraq currently has electricity capacity of 9,000 megawatts (MW), and aims to triple it to 27,000 MW in the coming four years, since the national grid still only supplies a few hours of power each day.
