(MENAFN) The new tourism minister of Tunisia, Mehdi Haouas, said that tourism revenues and visits to Tunisia decreased by 40 percent in January 2011 as a result of the recent revolution that took place in the North African country, reported Arab News.
Haouas said that 6 percent of Tunisia’s total economic output comes from tourism. Also, the industry provides around 400,000 jobs and employs 4 percent of the population.
It is worth noting that Tunisia was considered a getaway for Europeans who enjoyed visiting its beaches and great sceneries. The country was known for its wide beaches, deserts and ancient ruins.
