(MENAFN) The World Trade Organization (WTO) announced that the its General Council has agreed to establish a working party to examine the request of Syria for WTO membership, SANA reported.
Egyptian Ambassador to the UN Hisham Badr, Chair of the WTO Arab group, noted that Egypt tabled this request on behalf of Syria.
Badr described the step as positive and that it would encourage other Arab countries who care to join to start the process in order to benefit from the WTO membership and its inclusion in the multilateral trading system.
The chairman, Ambassador John Gero invited Syria to attend meetings of the General Council and, as appropriate, meetings of other WTO bodies as an observer.
The General Council decision raises the number of WTO accession working parties to 30.
