(MENAFN) According to a report by the Arab Forum for Environment and Development (Afed), Arab countries’ food imports which amounted to USD56 billion in 2011 are expected to soar to hit USD150 billion in the next years, Emirates 24/7 reported.
Afed’s report noted that despite Arab countries seeking to achieve food self-sufficiency, they are facing a number of challenges including limited cultivable land, few water resources and population growth, in addition to the negative effects of climate change.
“Our report emphasizes the need for effective public-private partnerships across the whole range of agricultural production to close the food gap that threatens the Arab countries,” Secretary-General of Afed said.
