04 Jul 2012

(MENAFN) Bahrain International Airport saw a12 percent increase in passenger traffic in the January-May period compared to a year earlier, local media reported.

The Alwasat daily newspaper said the airport received 3.35 million passengers during the five-month period, up from 2.99 million a year ago, citing Civil Aviation Affairs.

Last year, Bahrain aviation sector has been severely impacted by government unrest in the island Gulf state.

The country’s struggling national carrier Gulf Air, hit by falling passenger numbers, announced earlier this year it will shrink operations and seek cash from government funds.

Rival Bahrain Air said in March it would be open to a merger with Gulf Air in a bid to enhance the carriers’ network of flights and overall operational efficiency.
