(MENAFN) Bahrain International Airport’s (BIA) chief executive, Mohammed Binfalah, stated that in 2012, passenger traffic rose by 8.8 percent from a year earlier to a total of 8,479,884 passengers, reported Gulf Daily News.

Binfalah said that in March 2012, the airport received the IAG Cargo’s (British Airways World Cargo) new Boeing 747-800 Freighter (747-8F) jet airliner, and in April, it welcomed the same plane model from Cargolux.

Also in the year, the airport improved its lounge and Meet and Assist services by introducing Marhaba Bahrain, an industry leader in the field with an experience that exceeds 20 years.

Furthermore, the airport welcomed football legends, world leaders, artists and TV stars in 2012, with the summer season witnessing heavy traffic due to the pilgrimage season and the Formula 1 event.
