Cargo airports in the Middle East soar

12 Aug 2013

(MENAFN) Airports Council International (ACI) released figures showing that Dubai International Airport carried 202,080 tons of cargo in June, which represents a 3.6 increase compared to the same month a year before, The National reported.

Cargo levels at the airport jumped by 30.3 percent to 62,070 tons placing the airport at number 26 worldwide.

Also, Doha International Airport had 73,660 tons of cargo go through it in July; a jump of 9.71 percent increase compared to June placing it 24 on the ACI list.

Cargo levels at Middle Eastern airports grew in July while levels dropped for the top 50 world airports by an average of 1.1 percent.

“With the euro-area recession and overall sluggish consumer spending across European and North American economies, the loss of momentum in the demand for air transport is inevitable in these regions,” said ACI World’s Economics Director Rafael Echevarne.
