(MENAFN) A telecom conglomerate in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has been formed to construct a high-bandwidth transmission cable system across the GCC, The Peninsula Qatar reported.
The system will offer an economically and technically competitive connectivity in the Gulf as well as enable a terrestrial route to Europe to reduce latency and increase reliability.
A 100G optical transport network (OTN) is to be built atop a 1,400 kilometers terrestrial fibre optic cable to cope with increasing demand in the GCC.
The new system, dubbed Middle East-Europe Terrestrial System (MEETS), was planned and promoted by Vodafone, du, Zain and Zajil.
The landing party for the project in the UAE will be du. In Qatar, it will be Vodafone Qatar Q.S.C. Zain will be in Saudi Arabia and Zajil in both Bahrain and Kuwait.
