(MENAFN) Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) intends to construct a new clean coal power plant generating 1200 megawatts (MG).
DEWA is still looking for contractors to build the plant, which will be built in two phases generating 600 MG when phase one completes in 2020 and another 600 MG when the phase two completes the following year.
Dubai aims to lessen its dependence on oil and gas to generate power to save it for exports. The emirate has issued its 2030 Integrated Energy Strategy to do so. The plan aims to divide power generated in Dubai on different resources with 71 percent from natural gas, 12 percent from nuclear, 12 percent from coal and 5 percent from solar power by 2030.
