Over 57.6 million passengers passed through Dubai International Airport last year, overtaking Hong Kong International Airport as the world’s third busiest airport. It also exceeded the airport’s estimated 56.5 million passengers.
The airport said that it is on track to achieve its target to overtake London’s Heathrow as the busiest in the world by 2015.
Heathrow is near its capacity of 68 million passengers a year, while Dubai International is expected to accommodate 90 million people per year by 2018.
Freight cargo volumes at the airport rose by 3.9 percent to 2.28 million tones last year, the airport said.
