(MENAFN) Dubai International Airport saw passenger traffic soar 14 percent in January compared to a year earlier, the largest increase in 14 months, Reuters reported.
The airport handled 4.85 million passengers last month, up from 4.25 million in January 2011, the largest increase in 14 months, helped by holiday season demand.
Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, expected total traffic to reach 56.5 million this year, beating last year’s record of 51 million.
The strongest passenger growth came from Gulf Cooperation Council states, Western Europe and the Indian subcontinent. Aircraft movements also rose 8.4 percent from a year earlier to 29,680.
On the contrary, cargo volume dropped 2.6 percent to 173,531 tonnes in January, reflecting weaker global airfreight demand and fragile consumer confidence, the operator said.
