(MENAFN) Dubai Duty Free (DDF) Executive Vice Chairman, Colm McLoughlin, said that sales in the first three months of 2013 reached USD438 million, representing a year-on-year increase of 12 percent, reported Emirates 24/7.

McLoughlin stated that the opening of Dubai International Terminal 3 Concourse A in January contributed to the increase in sales in the first quarter, and boosted DDF’s retail space from 18,000 square metres to the current 26,000 square metres.

Furthermore, hiring at DDF continued to grow in the period bringing the total number of employees to 5,717.

Sales in the Emirates operations-dedicated Terminal 3 soared 19 percent, which is the biggest in terms of accumulative sales for the retailer, contributing with 61 percent to overall turnover, while the average-spend of passengers in Terminal 2 increased by 22 percent.

It’s worth noting that Liquor, Perfumes and Gold categories dominated the duty free sales, with perfume sales increasing by 16 percent to USD66.9 million.
