Dubai’s power capacity hits 9.646MW in 2012: DEWA

(MENAFN) Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) reported more than 10 percent increase in its power capacity and 17.5 percent increase in its desalinated water output capacity in 2012, Arabian Business reported.
The utility firm said its total installed power capacity reached 9,646 megawatts (MW) last year, up from 8,721MW in 2011.
Desalinated water production capacity reached 470 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD), up from 400 MIGD in 2011, the company added.
DEWA has increased the number of its 132kV main substations by 19, bringing the total to 184 in 2012, while the number of 400KV substations reached 18 last year compared to 17 in 2011, managing director and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said.
He added that DEWA’s 132kV electricity transmission networks were extended to 1,932km in 2012 compared to 1,687km in 2011, an increase of 14.5 percent.
Last year, the peak power load reached 6637MW with a reserve margin exceeding 300MW, while the peak demand for water during 2012 was 285MIGD with a reserve margin estimated at 185MIGD, the utility said.
