Egypt receives 17% more tourists in 2012

(MENAFN) Egypt’s tourism minister, Hisham Zaazou, stated that in 2012, the number of tourists arriving to the country jumped by 17 percent from 2011, reported Arabian Business.

Zaazou added that tourism income in the year posted a rise of 13 percent from a year before.

According to Reuters’ calculations, Egypt might have received 11.5 million tourists in 2012, whereas income from the tourism sector might have reached USD9.9 billion.

Economists say that before the onset of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak, the sector contributed with 11 percent of the country’s economic growth and a quarter of its foreign exchange earnings.

It is worth noting that in 2011, 9.8 million visitors came to Egypt, and generated USD8.8 billion income for the country.
