(MENAFN) Kuwait International Airport witnessed 11 percent growth in passenger traffic to 703,000 during May compared to a year earlier, the state news agency KUNA reported.
According to the airport’s data, the total number of passengers that passed through the airport included 343,000 incoming and 360,000 outgoing.
Total flights rose 7 percent to 7,178, while the total amount of air freight handled rose three percent to around 17 million kg, according to the official figures.
In December, Kuwait said that the ongoing USD3.2 billion airport expansion will be completed by the fourth quarter of 2016.
The expansion is expected to increase passenger capacity to 13 million a year from 5.69 million currently.
The contract was awarded to UK architects Foster + Partners last March. The firm counts Saudi Economic City and Abu Dhabi National Museum among its regional projects.
The six GCC states plan to spend around USD90 billion on revamping their airports to 2020.
