(MENAFN) The Defence Security Cooperation Agency said it has notified the US Congress of a possible foreign military sale to Qatar of a FPS-132 Block 5 Early Warning Radar (EWR), Arabian Business reported.
The principal contractor will be Raytheon Company in Massachusetts, according to the agency statement.
The air defense system and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support has an estimated cost of USD1.1 billion
The agency added the acquisition of the air defense system would “provide a permanent defensive capability to the Qatar Peninsula as well as protection of the economic infrastructure and well-being of Qatar”.
The Agency said the sale would also help strengthen Qatar’s capability to “counter current and future threats in the region and reduce dependence on US forces”.
