(MENAFN) Saudi Health Minister Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabiah stated that there are 122 hospitals and 305 primary health care clinics currently under construction, the official news agency SPA reported.

Al-Rabiah said that the ministry is planning to double beds in its hospitals in the next seven years, adding that King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has approved plans for a total of nearly 550 health projects costing more than USD3.2 billion.

Recently, King Abdullah has approved the opening of 420 clinics and the laying of the foundation stone for 127 more health projects in the country.

The planned projects are the ministry’s largest in its history, said Al-Rabiah, adding that among the plans there will be medical cities in the north and south of the country.

In August, Saudi Arabia signed contracts worth USD1.06 billion to build healthcare projects across the Kingdom.

These projects include a specialist hospital in Jazan and a maternity and paediatric hospital in Jeddah.

The projects also included the construction of the first phase of Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Medical City in the Northern Region, the establishment of Miqat Hospital in Madinah and Jomoum Hospital in Makkah.
