(MENAFN) A tender was floated by the Oman Power and Water Procurement (OPWP) to take bids for an independent water project (IWP), Times of Oman reported.
This new project at Quriyyat in Muscat makes the third IWP in the Sultanate following Sur and Ghubra projects.
The capacity of the planned desalination plant is expected to be at 180,000 cubic meters per day. The plant, upon completion in 2016, will allow potable water to be pumped to Muscat.
The country’s second IWP was given to a conglomerate under the name of Muscat City Desalination Company headed by Malakoff International Limited and including Spain’s Cadagua and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation.
A desalination plant with the capacity of 191,000 cubic meters per day is currently being built by the conglomerate in Ghubra. The first IWP, completed at Sur in 2009, has the capacity of 80,000 cubic meters per day.
