(MENAFN) The UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) stated that in the January-November period of 2012, over 2 million mobile phone users were added to the market, bringing the total number of subscribers to 13.75 million, reported Emirates 24/7.
The TRA said that the addition was the biggest yearly increase since the country launched GSM services 20 years ago.
The figure boosted the GSM penetration ratio to 168 percent at the end of November, compared with 155 percent at the end of 2011.
The UAE’s high per capita income, affordable telecom facilities, advanced GSM services provided by telco providers as well as the trend by many mobile phone users, mainly nationals, to change their handsets to obtain more sophisticated features are key factors that enabled the country to have one of the world’s highest mobile phone penetration levels.
It is worth noting that the UAE’s two service providers, etisalat and du, introduced attractive offers to seize a bigger share of the lucrative market in the UAE, one of the richest nations, with their offers raising the number of mobile subscribers in the 11 month period.
