(MENAFN) The UAE’s Telecom Regulatory Authority’s (TRA) director, Mohammed Al Ghanem, stated that after 2015, the authority may award licenses to new telecom operators in the country, reported Emirates 24/7.
Al Ghanem added that the UAE, which has two telecom operators, Etisalat and Du, has inked an agreement with the World Trade Organization (WTO) that demands the country to consider opening up its telecom sector to other operators by the end of 2015.
However, he said that at the current time, the second largest Arab economy has no plans to introduce new telecom operators until that date.
It is worth noting that as of the end of May, the UAE’s telecom sector posted around 15.1 million subscribers.
