(MENAFN) Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority’s (Sctda) chairman, Mohamed Ali Al Noman, stated that during the first quarter, occupancy rate at the emirate’s hotels rose to 78 percent from 75 percent in 2011’s same period, reported Khaleej Times.
Al Noman added that the number of tourists who stayed at Sharjah’s hotels and hotel apartments grew 11 percent to 466,218 guests from 421,516 guests a year earlier.
He also said that the total number of hotel and hotel apartment room nights jumped to 539,393 in the quarter, compared with 478,456 in 2011.
Moreover, the number of European visitors reached 171,600 in the period, representing 37 percent of the total number of foreign tourists, whereas the number of GCC visitors reached 166,525, accounting for 36 percent of total visitors, followed by other Arab guests, who represented 12 percent of total visitors, at 56,698.
It is worth noting that at the current time, the emirate has 100 hotels and hotel apartments, with room capacity of 9,015.
