UAE’s Etisalat will cut service from fake mobiles

22 Dec 2011

(MENAFN) Etisalat, UAE’s largest telecom operator, announced it would start a campaign to crackdown on fake mobile phones next year, Arabian Business reported.

Etisalat said the move follows the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) order to UAE’s telecom operators to crackdown on the estimated 70,000 counterfeit handsets believed to be in the country. The crackdown will begin on January 1.

Etisalat notified its customers via SMS message warning them of using fake mobile devices with a fake international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) number in order to avoid disconnection of service.

TRA said that UAE law prohibits the use, sale, purchase or distribution of fake mobile phones, or risking given notices and fines and in some cases their retail licenses withdrawn.
